Sohail Tanvir has lashed out at fellow Pakistan left-arm seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi, saying he “doesn’t use his brain” when bowling.
Explaining further, Tanvir noted that Afridi “does not know when to bowl which delivery”, showing that he doesn’t have a gameplan going into matches.
Additionally, he criticised the 25-year-old’s decision-making skills and urged him to become smarter so that he can be a more effective bowler.
“He has everything, but he doesn’t use his brain. He does not know when to bowl which delivery. Yes, you sit down with your coach to create a general gameplan, but the situation on the field can change quickly. Coaches can provide support, but you must respond to the game’s circumstances and adapt your plan as needed,” Tanvir was quoted as saying by A Sports.
“Shaheen is a wonderful kid; now he has learned out-swing as well, but what I think… he is not smart enough and lacks decision-making power.
“Over time, you must develop a new strategy. If you cannot counterattack and fail to become smarter, the same situation that is occurring with Shaheen Afridi will happen to you.”
Afridi was recently involved in Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand and finished with two wickets in four games at an average of 66.50 and an economy rate of 10.23.
Afterwards, he captained the Lahore Qalandars in the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL) and led them to the title.
The talented fast bowler put his skills on show throughout PSL 10 and ended up being the highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets in 13 games at an average of 16.42 and an economy rate of 7.76.
Following PSL 10, Pakistan took on Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, but Afridi was not selected in the team.
The men in green won the series 3-0.
