Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Rashid Latif believes spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan “is a better choice for [the] captaincy”.
Shadab has leadership experience as he captains Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and has also been in charge of numerous other domestic sides.
What sets the 26-year-old apart from the other candidates in Latif’s eyes is his “ability to lead young players effectively”.
“Shadab Khan is a better choice for [the] captaincy as he has the ability to lead young players effectively,” he was quoted as saying on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Shadab hasn’t played international cricket since the 2024 T20 World Cup, but has remained active in domestic cricket, where he is currently playing for Ghani Glass in the President’s Trophy Grade-I tournament.
In three matches, the Mianwali native has taken one wicket at an average of 171.
He has also made 115 runs, which includes a top score of 55, at an average of 23.
Since he has not played for the national team since last year, Shadab missed Pakistan’s tours of Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
After this, the men in green took on the West Indies in a two-Test series in Multan, which ended as a 1-1 draw.
Pakistan are now involved in an ODI tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa, after which they will feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held from February 19 to March 9.
