Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed has hinted that he might retire in the near future, saying “it will happen soon”.
Sarfaraz used to captain the national team in all three formats, but after being removed from the leadership role, he saw his playing opportunities dwindle significantly.
The 37-year-old last represented his country in December 2023 as Mohammad Rizwan has been the first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman for the last few years.
Despite not playing much international cricket, Sarfaraz has remained active in domestic cricket, with his most recent appearance coming during the Champions One-Day Cup in September 2024, where he was a player-mentor for the Dolphins.
“Regarding my career, I believe there’s nothing more to say. I understand what you’re waiting for, and it will happen soon,” the Karachi native was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
The Pakistan team recently travelled to Australia for a limited overs series and won the ODI leg 2-1 before being battered 3-0 in the T20Is.
They then headed to Zimbabwe and won both the ODI and T20I series 2-1.
Pakistan are now in South Africa and began by losing the T20I series 2-0 before bouncing back to claim a 3-0 win in the ODIs.
Next up will be a two-Test series, which will begin on December 26 in Centurion.
