Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim said it was time to reward wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan following his strong performances in domestic cricket.

Azam, who is the son of former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan, earned his maiden call-up to the national team for the tour of England and the West Indies.

In the Pakistan Cup, the 22-year-old accumulated 186 runs in seven games for Sindh, which included a top score of 69, at an average of 46.50 and a strike-rate of 124.83.

Prior to the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) postponement, he scored 98 runs in five matches for the Quetta Gladiators at an average of 19.60 and a strike-rate of 144.11.

With Azam in the T20 squad, Wasim is hoping that the big-hitter puts his abilities on show when given the chance.

“As such, keeping in view the above and in consultation with captain Babar Azam and head [coach] Misbah-ul-Haq, we have tried our best to maintain the winning combinations but at the same time recalled four experienced players and rewarded uncapped Azam Khan for his domestic performance, while also giving him the required confidence for the future challenges,” Wasim was quoted as saying in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) press release.

Pakistan will play three ODIs and three T20 Internationals against England. The ODI series will begin on July 8 and conclude on July 13, while the T20 series will be held from July 16 to 20.

The tour of the West Indies will consist of five T20 Internationals and two Tests, with the T20 series getting underway on July 27 and ending on August 3.

As for the Test series, it will start on August 12 and conclude on August 24.
