Only 52.1 overs of play was possible on the first day at Headingley, but it was enough for England pace bowler Jofra Archer to take a six-wicket haul and play an instrumental role in skittling Australia out for 179.

Opting to bowl first on a rain-hit day, England got the early breakthrough they were looking for as Australia opener Marcus Harris was caught behind off the bowling of Archer for eight runs.

Usman Khawaja also scored eight runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Stuart Broad.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stabilised the innings with a 111-run partnership, during which Warner brought up his fifty, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Archer for 61, which came off 94 balls and included seven boundaries.

Travis Head failed to trouble the scorers as he was clean bowled by Broad, while Matthew Wade was cleaned up by Archer for a duck.

Australia captain Tim Paine only made 11 runs before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

Archer then took out James Pattinson and Pat Cummins, while Labuschagne was given out lbw off the bowling of Ben Stokes for a 129-ball 74, which included 10 boundaries.

Australia were bowled out for 179 when Nathan Lyon was trapped lbw off the bowling of Archer for one run.

Archer was easily the pick of the bowlers with six wickets, while Broad snapped up two, and Woakes and Stokes claimed one wicket each.

England will start batting on Friday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
