Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed has admitted that Babar Azam and Haris Sohail produced “some of the finest batting I have ever seen”.

Sarfraz’s comments come after Pakistan beat New Zealand, who were previously undefeated, by six wickets in their World Cup clash at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Azam and Sohail played crucial roles in leading the men in green to victory as the former struck an unbeaten 101, which came off 127 balls and included 11 boundaries.

As for Sohail, he made 68, which came off 76 deliveries and included five boundaries and two sixes, before he was run out by Martin Guptill.

Pakistan were 110/3 when Sohail came out to the crease, and he and Azam proceeded to take Pakistan to the verge of victory with their 126-run partnership.

“The batting by Babar Azam and Haris Sohail was some of the finest batting I have ever seen,” Sarfraz was quoted as saying by PakPassion. “This was a tricky pitch and we knew that 238 was not an easy target, so our message to the batsmen was to play the 50 overs.

“Credit goes to Babar Azam in the way he batted and excelled today. For me, he played one of the best innings I have ever seen.

“Also [credit goes to] the way Haris Sohail handled the pressure as it’s not an easy task to bat here.”

Pakistan’s next World Cup match will be against Afghanistan at Headingley on Saturday.
