Moin Khan: “You have to promote players who fit into the team composition”

Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan believes that the national team made the right decision in dropping opener Abid Ali from the World Cup squad.

Abid scored a sensational century in his ODI debut, but in the recent five-match ODI series against England, he only featured in the fifth ODI and scored five runs.

However, Moin noted that Abid had to be axed from the side as regular openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman have been in excellent form as of late.

Imam accumulated 234 runs in four games against England, which included a career-best knock of 151, at an average of 117.

As for Zaman, he amassed 200 runs in five matches, which included a hundred and a half-century, at an average of 40.

“You try to invest in young players. The players that have been given a chance such as Imam-ul-Haq have been performing really well. You have to promote players who fit into the team composition,” Moin was quoted as saying by cricketpakistan.com.pk. “Abid no doubt is talented and scores runs. If the current players don’t perform well then Abid will have a chance to come into the side.”

Pakistan’s second World Cup warm-up game will be against Bangladesh in Cardiff on May 26.

They will then begin their World Cup campaign against the West Indies in Nottingham on May 31.
