Younis Khan is set to become the coach of Pakistan’s Under-19 team

Legendary Pakistan batsman Younis Khan is set to be appointed as coach of the country’s Under-19 team, according to a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) source.

The source said a few formalities still need to be completed, but confirmed that the announcement will be made in the near future.

“A decision has been taken in this regard within the PCB but the announcement will be made soon after completing a few formalities,” the source was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

In addition to being named coach of the Under-19 team, the source said that the 41-year-old will also be the chief selector of the national junior selection committee.

“Younis will be given full powers as head coach and also chief selector of the national junior selection committee and he will be assisted by another former Test player, Nadeem Khan, who is in line to be appointed as manager,” the source said.

The source added that Younis and Nadeem will hold their respective positions for a lengthy period of time. With that in mind, it is likely that they could be in charge until the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in 2020.

“In the past there has been a tendency to change coaches and managers of the junior team after one or two series and this has hurt the progress and development of the junior players,” the source said.

Younis retired from international cricket in 2017 and is Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 10,099 runs, which includes 34 centuries and 33 fifties, at an average of 52.05.
