The Melbourne Renegades beat their crosstown rivals, the Melbourne Stars, by 13 runs to win the Big Bash League for the first time.

Choosing to bowl first, the Stars got the early breakthrough they were looking for as Renegades opener Marcus Harris was caught behind off the bowling of Jackson Bird for 12 runs.

Sam Harper only made six runs before he was caught and bowled by Bird.

Renegades captain Aaron Finch mustered 13 runs before he was run out by Bird.

With Cameron White and Mackenzie Harvey both being dismissed by Adam Zampa, the Renegades found themselves struggling at 65/5.

However, Tom Cooper and Dan Christian came to the rescue with an unbeaten 80-run partnership.

Cooper finished on 43, which came off 35 balls and included two boundaries and two sixes, while Christian remained undefeated on 38, which came off 30 deliveries and included two boundaries and a six.

Thanks to Cooper and Christian, the Renegades finished on 145/5 off their 20 overs.

Bird and Zampa picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing 146 to win, the Stars got off to a superb start as Ben Dunk and Marcus Stoinis forged a 93-run partnership, during which Dunk brought up his half-century, before Stoinis was clean bowled by Cameron Boyce for 39.

Peter Handscomb failed to trouble the scorers as he was dismissed by Chris Tremain for a duck.

Dunk went on to score 57, which came off 45 balls and included four boundaries and a six, before he was caught by Christian at long-off off the bowling of Boyce.

Once Dunk was gone, the Stars completely collapsed as they went from 99/3 in the 15th over to finishing 132/7 off their 20 overs.

Boyce, Christian and Tremain took two wickets apiece, while Harry Gurney claimed one.

Christian was named Man of the Match.
