Former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist firmly believes that Steve Smith could become captain of the national team once again.

Smith was stripped of the captaincy when he was banned for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal during Australia’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.

Smith was banned from captaining Australia for two years, meaning that when he finishes serving his 12-month ban, he will have to wait for another year before he can become eligible for the leadership role again.

While Gilchrist admits that Tim Paine has done an excellent job as Smith’s successor, the 46-year-old feels that Smith could be leading the country once again in the future.

“I don’t think it’s out of the question that Steve Smith could possibly captain Australia again one day,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying by foxsports.com.au. “He’s young enough and if he wants to play long enough, there’s every chance … Wouldn’t that be an amazing story of redemption.

“We all understood that he’s shown his remorse and his disappointment in himself and the damage that came out of that incident … Who knows down the track but it’s a long way off.”
