Sri Lanka opening batsman Kusal Perera has been “cleared of any serious injury” after he landed heavily on an advertising board when attempting to take a catch on the third day of the third Test against the West Indies in Barbados.

The incident occurred in the 29th over of the West Indies’ second innings. The hosts were struggling at 82/9 when Kusal was injured.

He immediately clutched his chest and an ambulance came onto the field after he signalled for assistance. Kusal was put on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital for a scan. Due to what had happened, the players went off for the dinner break.

Sri Lanka team manager Asanka Gurusinha confirmed that the 27-year-old had not sustained any serious injury.

“He was cleared of any serious injury,” Gurusinha was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “But we will have to see how he comes up tomorrow morning before making a decision. He is very sore.”

With Kusal unable to open the batting, Danushka Gunathilaka replaced him at the top of the order.

Sri Lanka were set a target of 144 to win after bowling the West Indies out for 93, but ended the day on 81/5 after West Indies skipper Jason Holder took a four-wicket haul.
