Peter Siddle: “I’ve had a lot of success over there and I’ve spent plenty of time over there”

Pace bowler Peter Siddle has revealed that he is determined to be part of Australia’s squad for the 2019 Ashes series in England.

Australia regained the coveted urn after they demolished England 4-0 in the recently concluded Ashes series.

The pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood all had an impact as they took 23, 22 and 21 wickets respectively.

However, even though Australia’s seamers proved to be too much for England to handle, Siddle feels that the same tactic won’t work when the Baggy Greens travel to their opponent’s backyard next year.

“You’ve just got to take a look at the teams that have done well over there and they’re not the teams that bowl fast,” Siddle, who hasn’t played Test cricket since November 2016, told cricket.com.au. “I think our thinking over previous tours probably hasn’t been in the right direction.”

The major obstacle when Australia head to England, according to Siddle, is the pace duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Anderson and Broad average 24.29 and 27.12 in England respectively and have combined to claim almost 600 wickets on home soil.

While Siddle admits that Australia will have to be aware of the threat Anderson and Broad pose, he added that he is capable of having the same kind of impact the pair have in England as he has spent a lot of time playing cricket in the country. He also pointed out that the English conditions suit his style of bowling.

“There’s a reason why Broad and (Jimmy) Anderson have unbelievable records in England, and they don’t bowl fast. They’re a perfect example,” the 33-year-old said. “I sort of see myself as similar to those guys. I can play my role and I think my record over there speaks for itself. The conditions that get rolled out over there suit me.

“I’ve had a lot of success over there and I’ve spent plenty of time over there.”
