Jake Weatherald hammered a sparkling 115 as the Adelaide Strikers downed the Hobart Hurricanes by 25 runs to be crowned Big Bash League (BBL) champions for the first time.

Choosing to bat first, the Strikers got off to a brisk start, with Alex Carey and Weatherald amassing a 41-run partnership in just under five overs.

However, their stand was broken when Carey was clean bowled by Jofra Archer for 18.

Weatherald and Strikers captain Travis Head kept the runs flowing with a magnificent 140-run partnership, during which Weatherald brought up his hundred.

With the Strikers cruising towards a massive total, the Hurricanes tried to do everything in their power to get a breakthrough.

However, they had to wait until the 19th over to do so as Weatherald was caught by Hurricanes captain George Bailey off the bowling of Dan Christian for 115 off 70 balls, which included nine boundaries and eight sixes.

Head went on to make 44 off 29 deliveries, which included two boundaries and a six, while Colin Ingram struck a six-ball 16. As a result, the Strikers finished on 202/2 off their 20 overs.

Archer and Christian picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 203 to win, the Hurricanes lost opener Tim Paine on the fifth ball of the innings as he was caught behind off the bowling of Head for five runs.

Bailey and D’Arcy Short made up for the loss of Paine with an 81-run partnership before Bailey was dismissed by Peter Siddle for 46, which came off 33 balls and included two boundaries and two sixes.

Ben McDermott only made nine runs before he was given out lbw off the bowling of Siddle.

Short went on to score 68 off 44 balls, which included six boundaries and four sixes, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Siddle.

Matthew Wade went without scoring, but even though Christian thumped a 19-ball 29, it was not enough to get his side over the line.

Siddle was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Head claimed one.

Weatherald was named Man of the Match.
