South Africa batsman Temba Bavuma will be sidelined for the third Test against India in Johannesburg after sustaining a broken finger.

Bavuma fractured his right ring finger while representing the Cape Cobras in their Momentum One Day Cup match against the Knights on January 17.

The 27-year-old will need three to four weeks to recover and the national selectors have opted not to name a replacement for him.

There was a chance that Bavuma would have been picked for the third Test as opening batsman Aiden Markram is in a race against time to recover from a mild left quadricep strain.

However, Markram will undergo a fitness test on January 23 to determine whether he will be fit enough to play in Johannesburg.

Should Markram fail his fitness test, is is highly likely that Theunis de Bruyn will take his spot for the match, which begins on January 24.

As for Bavuma, he is set to make a full recovery prior to the four-Test series against Australia, which gets underway on March 1.
