Hobart Hurricanes opener D’Arcy Short struck a magnificent 97 to help his side take down the Sydney Thunder by nine runs.

However, Thunder opener Jos Buttler deserves a lot of credit for his incredible innings of 81.

Being put in to bat first, the Hurricanes lost opener Alex Doolan in the fifth over, but Short and Matthew Wade made up for it with a 58-run partnership.

Wade ended up scoring 27 before he was caught by Mitchell McClenaghan at deep backward square leg off the bowling of Fawad Ahmed.

Short and Ben McDermott kept the runs flowing with a superb 104-run stand, during which Short found himself touching distance of his hundred.

However, Short was unable to get to the triple figure mark as he was dismissed by Thunder captain Shane Watson, who replaced McClenaghan midway through the final over after the New Zealand international bowled two no-balls and was taken out of the attack.

Short, who was sent packing on the penultimate ball of the innings, made 97 off 63 balls, which included nine boundaries and four sixes.

McDermott went on to make 49 off 25 deliveries, which included six boundaries and two sixes, as the Hurricanes finished on 189/3 off their 20 overs.

Watson, Fawad and Gurinder Sandhu picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 190 to win, the Thunder got off to a fantastic start as Buttler and Kurtis Patterson amassed a 69-run partnership before Patterson was run out by Short for 36.

Buttler and Watson kept the scoreboard ticking with a 56-run stand, during which Buttler brought up his fifty, before Watson was dismissed by Cameron Boyce for 36.

Boyce struck again the very next ball as he removed Callum Ferguson.

With the Thunder continuing to lose wickets, Buttler tried to keep his side in contention, but he fell in the final over for 81, which came off 43 balls and included seven boundaries and five sixes.

With Buttler back in the pavilion, the Thunder were unable to get the job done as they fell short of their target.

Boyce and Jofra Archer took two wickets apiece, while Tymal Mills and Dan Christian claimed one wicket each.

Short was named Man of the Match.
