India’s woes with the bat continued on the second day in Kolkata as Dasun Shanaka struck twice in quick succession before heavy rain brought play to an end.

Starting off the day on 17/3, India only added 13 runs to their overnight score before Ajinkya Rahane was caught behind off the bowling of Shanaka for four runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin fared no better as he was caught by Dimuth Karunaratne as backward point off the bowling of Shanaka for four runs.

Not long after, the rain came and since it refused to relent, the umpires had no choice but to bring proceedings to an end for the day.

Cheteshwar Pujara fought valiantly and finished on 47 off 102 balls, which included nine boundaries, while wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha remained undefeated on six off 22 deliveries, which included a solitary boundary.

Suranga Lakmal, who punished India on the first day, remains the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Shanaka claimed two.

India ended day two on 74/5 and will continue batting on Saturday at 09:15 local time or 03:45 GMT.
