The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have confirmed that they have seen footage that allegedly shows all-rounder Ben Stokes throwing numerous punches in a brawl outside a nightclub in Bristol.
Stokes was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning and held overnight in prison on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after a 27-year-old man suffered facial injuries.
Despite being detained by Somerset and Avon Police, Stokes was included in England’s Ashes squad and retained the vice-captaincy.
“What he has shown so far for us is that he is a leader within the group when it comes to cricket – there is no denying that,” England head coach Trevor Bayliss had told Sky Sports ahead of the fourth ODI against the West Indies. “I’m sure there will be some investigations going forward. But at the moment I am quite happy for him to be the vice-captain.”
The video, which was obtained by The Sun, supposedly shows Stokes fighting two men.
Stokes was initially reported to have fractured his hand, but England’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss confirmed that the 26-year-old had only fractured his finger during the altercation.
Speaking about the video, an ECB spokesman said: “We have seen this footage for the first time tonight – when posted by The Sun. There is an ongoing police investigation that will look at all available evidence, and we do have to respect that process.”
Somerset and Avon Police have already begun looking into the matter, while the ECB have launched their own investigation.
“It is is early days. I am just beginning to establish what went on over the course of that evening,” Strauss had said. “And the disciplinary process will flush that out. But I don’t anticipate those enquiries being finished before the end of the one-day series.
“As part of the disciplinary process we are obviously going to look at what went on on Sunday night and any other relevant information.”
