The St Lucia Stars finally earned their first point in the 2017 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after their match with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots was washed out after 8.1 overs.

While the Stars still languish at the bottom of the points table with one point and virtually have no chance of reaching the knockout stage, the Patriots are in second place with nine points from six games.

Coming into the game, the Patriots would have been looking to build on their 17-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method against the Barbados Tridents on August 18.

As for the Stars, they would have been eager to snap their six-game losing streak. In their most recent game, the franchise lost to the Jamaica Tallawahs by five wickets.

Following that game, the Stars stripped Darren Sammy of the captaincy and named Shane Watson as his successor.

Electing to bowl first, the Patriots got an early breakthrough as Stars opener Johnson Charles was caught by Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi off the bowling of Fabian Allen for five runs.

Charles’ opening partner, Andre Fletcher, and Watson began to rebuild the innings, but after putting together an unbeaten 19-run partneship, the rain came.

With the rain refusing to relent, the umpires had no choice but to call off the match.

Fletcher finished on 27 off 28 balls, which included four boundaries, while Watson remained undefeated on 12 off 11 deliveries, which included a solitary six.

Allen was the only bowler to take a wicket, but spinner Samuel Badree deserves a lot of credit as he conceded just 17 runs off his four overs.

The washout gives the Stars a glimmer of hope in regards to advancing to the knockout stage, but it will be extremely tough for them to get there as they need to win their last three league matches and hope that the Tridents and Guyana Amazon Warriors stumble in their remaining games.
