South Africa captain AB de Villiers has expressed his support for head coach Russell Domingo, saying that he wants the 42-year-old to retain his role.

Domingo’s tenure will come to an end after South Africa’s tour of England in August and even though Cricket South Africa will invite candidates to apply for the post, they confirmed that Domingo will be allowed to re-apply.

However, as of right now, it remains unclear whether Domingo will put his name forward for the job once again.

Nonetheless, De Villiers admitted that it was a “bitter pill to swallow” once he heard Domingo’s time as head coach would come to an end, especially since he treats the Port Elizabeth native “like family”.

“We’re with a great coach at the moment who is really leading the side well,” De Villiers said. “We all get along with him and we all love him as our coach.”

When asked if he would like to see Domingo return as head coach, De Villiers simply said: “Yes, definitely.”
