Chase celebrates after scoring his second Test century

The West Indies looked set for another collapse on the first day in Barbados, but batsman Roston Chase kept Pakistan at bay with his superb unbeaten knock of 126.

Choosing to bat first, West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite fell in the fifth over of the game as he was caught behind off the bowling of Mohammad Amir for nine runs.

Four balls later, Shimron Hetmeyer was on his way back to the pavilion as he was dismissed by Mohammad Abbas for one run.

Shai Hope fared no better as he was caught behind off the bowling of Yasir Shah for five runs.

With the West Indies having been reduced to 37/3 in the 17th over, Kieran Powell and Chase stabilised the innings with a 65-run partnership.

But, just as the West Indies were beginning to recover, Powell was trapped lbw off the bowling of Amir for 38, while Vishaul Singh became Abbas’ second victim.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich managed to make 29 runs before being removed by debutant Shadab Khan.

Reeling at 154/6, the hosts clawed their way back into contention via an unbeaten 132-run partnership between Chase and captain Jason Holder before stumps was called.

During the crucial stand, Chase surpassed his hundred, while Holder brought up his half-century.

Chase ended up finishing on 131 off 207 balls, which included 17 boundaries, while Holder remained undefeated on 58 off 125 deliveries, which included eight boundaries.

Amir and Abbas picked up two wickets apiece, while Yasir and Shadab claimed one wicket each.

The West Indies ended day one on 286/6 and will continue batting on Monday at 10:00 local time or 14:00 GMT.
