Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper Peter Nevill sustained, what looked like to be, a serious injury in his side’s Big Bash League (BBL) clash with the Adelaide Strikers on Monday.

The incident took place on the first ball of the 18th over in the Strikers’ chase of 172 to win.

Strikers captain Brad Hodge was on strike at the time and swung incredibly hard at a short ball bowled by Thisara Perera and his bat ended up flying out of his hand and striking Nevill on the side of the face.

Nevill was keeping his eye on the ball, which had been hit to deep backward square, and it wasn’t until it was too late when he saw the bat coming towards him.

Nevill was struck by the bat handle and after receiving treatment, he walked off the field with significant swelling to the right-hand side of his face.

Early indications point towards a broken jaw. Should that be the case, it would not only wreck the 31-year-old’s BBL campaign, but also his participation in the Sheffield Shield, in which he represents New South Wales.

Furthermore, it could also impact his international career, but it is unlikely to do so as Matthew Wade was selected ahead of him as Australia’s wicketkeeper for their upcoming Test tour of India next month.
