The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have cancelled batsman Darren Bravo’s contract following his outburst against the board’s president, Dave Cameron, via Twitter.

In addition to this, Bravo was also axed from the squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and sent home.

Bravo called Cameron a “big idiot” via Twitter following an interview in which Cameron had said that the 27-year-old had only been offered a grade C contract due to his disappointing performances with the bat.

A WICB release confirmed that Bravo had been “replaced due to inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour, which is contrary to his contractual obligations to the WICB”. Bravo’s spot in the side has been taken by Jason Mohammed.

The release added that Bravo’s “match/tour contract clearly states not to make any statement in or to any form of media (which shall include, without limitation, print media, television, radio, internet or any social networking media), or any other public statement, which would bring yourself, WICB or any official or authorised representative of WICB or the game of cricket into disrepute, and your agreement to use all such media in a responsible manner.”

Bravo was the West Indies’ second-highest run-scorer in their recent Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. In regards to a broader picture, Bravo has scored 1089 runs in 17 Tests since November 2014, which only puts him behind opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, who has amassed 1258 runs in 20 matches.

WICB’s director of cricket Richard Pybus also called on Bravo to delete the tweet by Saturday afternoon or he would be further punished by the board’s disciplinary panel.

“We also request you immediately remove the highlighted tweet from your account, and desist from tweeting about WICB officials in the future,” Pybus said. “We further request that you acknowledge, via your Twitter account, the impropriety of your actions and your recognition that your decision to publicly express your views on social media was not conduct befitting of a West Indies cricketer.

“I strongly discourage you from continuing to use Twitter or other social networking sites in a manner which might cause embarrassment to the West Indies Cricket Team, the West Indies Cricket Board or any official of the West Indies Cricket Board and which can potentially bring the game into disrepute.

“I ask that you also note that any further such action on your part, including failure to comply with our request above by 4 p.m. Eastern Caribbean time on November 12 2016, may result in further disciplinary action, including referral to the WICB Disciplinary Committee.”

Meanwhile, the WICB release added that spinner Sunil Narine would be replaced by Devendra Bishoo as he is returning home due to personal reasons.
