Former South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince has revealed that all-rounder JP Duminy nearly quit Test cricket when he was dropped for the New Year’s Test against England in Cape Town this year.
Duminy was left out of the side for the match, which was played in front of his home crowd, as the national selectors wanted to pick wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock.
Commentating for SuperSport on the third day of the first Test between Australia and South Africa, Prince, who was a national selector at the time, revealed that he had to give the news to the 32-year-old as the convenor of selectors, Linda Zondi, was not in the country.
“I remember I had to give him the news because the convenor of selectors, Linda Zondi, was not in town,” Prince said. “He wasn’t sure he had a role to play in the Test side anymore.”
Duminy put on a batting masterclass on Saturday as he scored a magnificent 141 to put the Proteas in total control over the Baggy Greens.
