Former India opening batsman Virender Sehwag will be the mentor of the Kings XI Punjab franchise for this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sehwag represented Punjab in the 2014 and 2015 IPL and has now opted to take a staff role as he has retired from all forms of cricket.

“Given the relationship and camaraderie I share with the squad, management and promoters, it feels like I am with my extended family,” Sehwag said. “Being a part of KXIP has always been a special experience and I am looking forward to the upcoming season in my new role.”

Punjab head coach Sanjay Bangar added: “Sehwag has been an integral part of the KXIP squad over the last two seasons and understands the dynamics of the team very well. With him stepping in as the mentor, the team will immensely benefit from his guidance and advice.”

The 2016 IPL will begin on April 9.
