Travis Head claimed three wickets as the Adelaide Strikers beat the Melbourne Renegades by 27 runs.

Even though Renegades opener Chris Gayle equalled the fastest Twenty20 half-century off just 12 balls, his side came up short.

Renegades captain Cameron White would have been brooding over his decision to bowl first as Tim Ludeman and Jono Dean set a solid foundation for the Strikers with their respective knocks of 49 and 48.

Despite enduring a minor collapse, Strikers skipper Brad Hodge hit a quickfire 37 not out and Jake Lehmann struck a rapid 24 to lead the Strikers to 170/5 off their 20 overs.

Xavier Doherty was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Chris Tremain, Nathan Rimmington and Dwayne Bravo took one wicket apiece.

Chasing 171 to win, Gayle was the only batsman to have a major impact as he blasted 56 off 17 balls, which included two boundaries and seven sixes.

With Rimmington and Cameron Gannon being the only other batsmen to surpass the 20-run mark, the Renegades fell well short of their target as they were bowled out for 143.

Head was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Jon Holland and Michael Neser snapped up two wickets apiece and Adil Rashid and Ben Laughlin claimed one wicket each.

Head was named Man of the Match.
