Brisbane Heat spinner Samuel Badree claimed a five-wicket haul and captain Chris Lynn smashed an entertaining 56 to lead their side to a comfortable 56-run win over the Melbourne Stars.

Stars skipper David Hussey would have been pleased with his decision to bowl first early on as Heat opener Jimmy Peirson was clean bowled by Michael Beer for a golden duck.

However, Lynn took over from that point and smashed 56 off just 24 balls, which included two boundaries and seven sixes, before he was dismissed by Adam Zampa.

Lendl Simmons managed to make 44 runs before Joe Burns, Nathan Reardon and Ben Cutting all chipped in with small, but useful, contributions as the Heat finished on 188/7 off their 20 overs.

Zampa and Ben Hilfenhaus picked up two wickets apiece, while Beer and Daniel Worrall chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 189 to win, the Stars found themselves in all kinds of trouble as Badree sliced through their top and middle order to leave them struggling at 23/5.

However, even with most of the Stars’ main batsmen back in the pavilion, Evan Gulbis refused to go down without a fight as he smashed a superb 61 not out, which came off 52 balls and included eight boundaries and a six.

Despite Gulbis’ valiant knock, the Stars ended up falling well short of their target as they finished on 132/9 off their 20 overs.

Badree was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Josh Lalor and Mitchell Swepson claimed two wickets each.

Badree was named Man of the Match.
