Marcus Stoinis took three wickets and Kevin Pietersen smashed an unbeaten 67 as the Melbourne Stars crushed the Melbourne Renegades by eight wickets in the Melbourne derby.

Stars captain David Hussey would have been delighted with his decision to bowl first early on as the Renegades were reduced to 78/5 in the 13th over. During their collapse, Renegades wicketkeeper Peter Nevill was run out in the most bizarre fashion by leg-spinner Adam Zampa.

The incident occurred in the 13th over when Dwayne Bravo hit a ball back down the ground, which deflected off Nevill’s bat and into Zampa’s nose before it went on to hit the stumps.

Following that unbelievable dismissal, Bravo took over as he blasted an unbeaten 59 off 37 balls, which included four boundaries and three sixes, to lead the Renegades to 155/6 off their 20 overs.

Stoinis was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Zampa and Ben Hilfenhaus snapped up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 156 to win, Stoinis was dismissed early on for 13 before Luke Wright was on his way back to the pavilion after having made a quickfire 37.

However, Wright’s wicket was to be the Renegades’ last taste of success as Pietersen and Peter Handscomb amassed an unbeaten 94-run partnership, during which Pietersen brought up his half-century, to lead their side to victory.

Pietersen finished on 67 off 43 balls, which included five boundaries and three sixes, while Handscomb remained undefeated on 39 off 30 deliveries, which included three boundaries and a six.
