Australia batsman Usman Khawaja scored 144 and opener Joe Burns made 128 to leave the West Indies in tatters on the first day of the second Test in Melbourne.

West Indies captain Jason Holder would have been pleased with his decision to bowl first initially as Australia opener David Warner was dismissed early on for 23.

Khawaja and Burns made up for the early loss of Warner with a 258-run partnership, during which Khawaja brought up his third Test century and Burns his second, before Burns was stumped by Denesh Ramdin off the bowling of Kraigg Brathwaite.

Burns’ magnificent knock of 128 came off 230 balls and included 16 boundaries and a six.
