Hossain turned himself in after being on the run for nearly a month

Bangladesh pace bowler Shahadat Hossain turned himself in to a Dhaka court on Monday after being on the run since September 7.

Hossain, who has been accused of assaulting and torturing his 11-year-old housemaid, was denied bail and was subsequently sent to prison.

Hossain’s wife was arrested from her relatives’ house in Dhaka just two days ago and the case against the pair has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

With Hossain and his wife now in custody, the court has asked the police to submit their report by October 12.

However, Hossain’s lawyer, Kazi Nazibullah Hiru, believes that the court should have granted his client bail and added that the 29-year-old was not present when his housemaid was assaulted.

“We appealed to the court that Shahadat should be released on bail for the greater interest of the country,” he told AFP. “We pleaded that he is not guilty as he was not present on the day the girl was allegedly beaten.”

Hossain, who was suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on September 13, filed a complaint with Mirpur police on September 6, stating that his housemaid had gone missing. The 11-year-old was found later that night by a local journalist, Khandakar Mozzamel Haque, who took her to the police station.

After a case was filed, the housemaid was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Hossain last represented Bangladesh in their second Test against Pakistan in May, during which he injured his right knee while bowling. It was later revealed that he would be out of action for six months as he required surgery to repair the damage done to his ligament and meniscus cartilage.
