Australia captain Michael Clarke believes that it is only a matter of time before someone scores a triple century in an ODI.

Clarke’s comments come after opener David Warner slammed a career-best 178 in Australia’s 275-run win over Afghanistan on March 4.

As of right now, India opener Rohit Sharma holds the record for the highest ODI score at 264.

But, given the huge pool of talent in the sport, Clarke firmly feels that a triple century is within touching distance for players like Sharma, Warner, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers.

“Someone like Davey, or Chris Gayle or AB de Villiers – on a smaller ground they possibly could,” Clarke said. “In this game, at the moment who knows? We are seeing so many different shots, different deliveries, so much power.

“There is a handful of players round the world who probably could. You probably have to open the batting so you have the full 50 overs.”

Gayle, who opens the batting for the West Indies, recently became the first non-Indian player to score an ODI double century in his side’s World Cup match against Zimbabwe on February 24. During his knock of 215, Gayle smashed 10 boundaries and 16 sixes.

De Villiers, who captains South Africa, made the fastest 150 in ODI history just a few days earlier when the Proteas crushed the West Indies by 157 runs. During his record-breaking knock of 162 not out, de Villiers hammered 17 boundaries and eight sixes.
