Pattinson likely to miss remainder of Sheffield Shield season

Australia pace bowler James Pattinson is set to miss the remainder of the Sheffield Shield season after he sustained a hamstring injury during Victoria’s match against Queensland in Alice Springs.

Even though Victoria ended up winning the match by an innings and 14 runs, Pattinson had no reason to smile as he felt some discomfort in left hamstring during the third and final day of the game.

While Pattinson was set to be rested for Victoria’s Sheffield Shield game against South Australia, it is highly likely that he will now miss their final round-robin fixture against Tasmania, which gets underway on March 13 in Alice Springs.

If that were the case, Pattinson may only get to play the Sheffield Shield final before the Australian selectors pick the squad that will travel to the West Indies.

“I think the best-case scenario would be the shield final, given the AFL [player] average is about 17 days for a grade one,” Victoria’s physiotherapist, Nick Adcock, told The Age.

Adcock also noted that he is confident Pattinson’s hamstring injury will have no effect on the back problems he has endured for much of his career.

“It’s an unrelated minor incident. The good thing is his back has held up, so that’s probably a positive,” he said. “He’s actually feeling fine, and even when he felt that spasm in his hamstring he said his body felt fantastic.”
