Former England pace bowler Stephen Harmison has been appointed as the manager of Ashington, who are a non-league football team.

Ashington, who currently sit in 16th place in Division One of the Ebac Northern League, have confirmed that Harmison’s first match as manager will come against Bishop Auckland on Tuesday.

Harmison used to play for Ashington as a centre back when he was a teenager, but he will now link up with head coach Ian Skinner as part of a new management team at Woodhorn Lane.

Harmison’s appointment comes after the club, which is located near Newcastle, suffered a 4-0 defeat to Marske United last weekend, which was their sixth loss in a row.
