Benaud is one of the most respected and beloved commentators in the game

Legendary cricket commentator Richie Benaud may commentate India’s tour of Australia in December from his living room if he is deemed unfit to be at the venues.

The 83-year-old has been in poor health as of late after he crashed his 1963 Sunbeam Alpine in October last year and suffered chest, shoulder and back injuries.

Due to the accident, Benaud was unable to commentate during the last Ashes series, in which Australia whitewashed England 5-0 on home soil.

Channel Nine chief executive David Gyngell stated that Benaud is still one of the most beloved commentators in the game. He added that he would allow the former Australian captain to commentate from home, just to allow the country to hear his voice again.

“That’s what I’ve put to him,” Gyngell told the Sydney Morning Herald. “If he’s not up to calling from the ground this summer, I’d like him to call from home. He’d be the ultimate armchair caller from the couch, wouldn’t he?

“I’d prefer to have him calling at the ground, but I would say that will be difficult. If I have my way, he will be calling it from his home but it is completely his decision.”
