Brathwaite struck 10 boundaries during his brilliant knock of 68

The second day of the highly-anticipated third Test between the West Indies and New Zealand in Barbados ended in disappointment as heavy rain resulted in the day being abandoned just a short while after the lunch break.

However, the bright spot of the day came from West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who scored a fluent half-century.

Starting out the day on 32/0, the West Indies’ opening pair of Chris Gayle and Brathwaite managed to convert their 32-run partnership into a 79-run partnership before Gayle was caught by Hamish Rutherford at long-on off the bowling of Mark Craig for 42.

Brathwaite and Kirk Edwards kept the runs flowing with a 74-run partnership, during which Brathwaite brought up his half-century, before he was caught by Tim Southee at short cover off the bowling of Neil Wagner.

Brathwaite’s fantastic knock of 68 came off 116 balls and included 10 boundaries.

Just a short while after the lunch break, the heavens parted and the players were ushered off the field.

However, the rain refused to relent and as a result, the umpires had no choice but to bring play to an end for the day.

Prior to the rain, Edwards and Darren Bravo put together an unbeaten 16-run partnership.

Edwards finished on 42 off 64 balls, which included four boundaries and a six, while Bravo remained undefeated on eight off 22 deliveries, which included two boundaries.

Craig and Wagner picked up one wicket apiece.

The West Indies ended day two on 169/2 and will continue batting tomorrow at 09:30 local time or 13:30 GMT.
