England opening batsman Alex Hales has been called up as a potential replacement for captain Alastair Cook, who may miss the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham due to tightness in his right groin.
Hales, who made a magnificent 66 in England’s nine-run loss to Sri Lanka in the one-off Twenty20 International, is likely to open the batting with Ian Bell if Cook is deemed unfit to play.
Michael Carberry is another potential candidate to replace Cook, but he is likely to remain on the sidelines due to Hales’ call-up.
It was also announced that Eoin Morgan would assume the role of captain if Cook was ruled out for the match.
