The Southern Rocks are currently atop the points table in Zimbabwe’s domestic 50-over tournament

Zimbabwe’s Masvingo franchise, the Southern Rocks, are set to be terminated when Zimbabwe Cricket reveal a new and revamped edition of the country’s domestic league.

The decision to axe the Southern Rocks franchise is also seen as a cost-cutting measure since Zimbabwe Cricket are heavily in debt.

“The visit by the ICC CEO was pursuant to the ICC’ s decision to work with ZC to reduce its existing cost and base and come up with a business plan which included, inter alia, reviewing the structure of the domestic cricket including the number of professional cricketers supported by ZC and the number of franchises,” a document released by Zimbabwe Cricket said.

The Southern Rocks are at the top of the country’s 50-over league after having won four of their six matches.

However, they are at the bottom of the table in Zimbabwe’s first-class tournament as they have lost three games and drawn two.
