Kallis surpassed Dravid as the third-highest all-time run-scorer in Test cricket history
South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis scored his 45th Test century and surpassed the legendary Rahul Dravid as the third-highest all-time run-scorer in Test cricket history during the fourth day of the second Test against India in Durban.
Kallis was well supported by all-rounder Robin Peterson, who scored a magnificent half-century, which left India fighting for survival heading into the fifth and final day.
Starting out the day on 299/5, Kallis and pace bowler Dale Steyn were able to convert their one-run partnership into an 86-run partnership, during which Kallis brought up his 45th Test century, before being caught behind off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja.
Kallis’ historic knock of 115 came off 316 balls and included 13 boundaries.
Steyn ended up scoring 44 runs before being caught behind off the bowling of Zaheer Khan.
Peterson and Faf du Plessis kept the runs flowing with an outstanding 110-run partnership, during which Peterson registered his half-century, before being caught by Murali Vijay at mid-off off the bowling of Khan.
Du Plessis scored 43 runs before being run out.
South Africa were eventually bowled out for 500, giving them a lead of 166 runs.
Jadeja, who recorded his second five-wicket haul, picked up six wickets, while Khan snapped up two and Mohammed Shami chipped in with one.
Trailing by 166 runs, India got off to a horrible start as Vijay was caught by South Africa captain Graeme Smith at first slip off the bowling of Vernon Philander for just six runs.
Shikhar Dhawan only made 19 runs before du Plessis pulled off an absolute blinder to dismiss him.
Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara amassed an unbeaten 15-run partnership before bad light stopped play, which eventually led to the umpires bringing the day to an end.
Kohli finished on 11 off 26 balls, which included one boundary, while Pujara remained undefeated on 32 off 90 deliveries, which included four boundaries.
Philander and Peterson picked up one wicket apiece.
India ended the day on 68/2 and will continue batting tomorrow at 09:30 local time or 07:30 GMT.
