Randall set up a cricket academy at Stirling Primary School

A former South African first-class cricketer has died after suffering a blow to the side of the head during a Border Cricket Board Premier League match in Alice in the Eastern Cape.

Darryn Randall, 32, was participating in a match between Old Selbornians and Fore Hare University when he was struck on the side of the head while attempting a pull shot.

He collapsed at the crease and was rushed to Alice Hospital, but the medical staff were unable to revive him.

Legendary South Africa wicketkeeper Mark Boucher paid his respects via Twitter, and said: “Thoughts and prayers go out to the Randalls! Such sad news! Darren was a special boy! Life is short guys! Live it like there’s no tomorrow!”

Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat also paid tribute to Randall, and said: “This is a very sad day, indeed. I would like to convey CSA’s deepest condolences on behalf of the South African cricketing family not just to his family and friends but also to all the players, umpires, clubs and everybody else who was present at this match. CSA will be offering counselling to all those involved.”

Randall, who was a wicketkeeper-batsman, represented Border in four first-class matches and four List A matches from 2009 to 2010.

He also played for a variety of youth teams while he was a student at Stirling Primary and Selborne College in East London.

The 32-year-old had also become a respected coach as he established a cricket academy at Stirling Primary School.

He is survived by his mother and fiancée.
