Anderson recorded his maiden Test century
New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson gave the Black Caps a massive 137-run lead over Bangladesh after scoring his maiden Test century during the third day of the second Test in Mirpur.
Anderson was well supported by Kane Williamson, who made 62, Ross Taylor, who scored 53 and BJ Watling and Ish Sodhi, both of whom are unbeaten on 59 and 55 respectively.
Starting the day on 107/3, Taylor managed to convert his overnight score of 37 into a half-century before getting caught out off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan.
Taylor’s 53 runs came off 79 balls and included five boundaries.
However, just as Bangladesh had made a vital breakthrough, New Zealand regrouped and stabilised their innings behind a magnificent 140-run partnership between Williamson, who was hit in the side of the face by a delivery from Rubel Hossain yesterday, and Anderson.
Williamson and Anderson both brought up their half-centuries and were looking in good nick until Williamson lost his concentration and paid for it with his wicket.
Williamson scored 62 off 151 deliveries, which included six boundaries.
Williamson’s dismissal led to a flurry of wickets, but Anderson continued to stay focused on his task.
He eventually registered his maiden century before debutant Al-Amin Hossain nabbed his first Test wicket when Anderson drove the ball straight to Sohag Gazi at extra cover.
Anderson’s impeccable knock of 116 came off 173 balls and included 13 boundaries and two sixes.
With New Zealand already having taken a lead, Watling and Sodhi added insult to injury as they put together an unbeaten 84-run partnership before stumps was called.
Watling finished on 59 off 156 balls, which included four boundaries, while Sodhi recorded his maiden half-century and remained undefeated on 55 off 67 deliveries, which included seven boundaries.
Al Hasan was easily the pick of Bangladesh’s bowlers as he registered his 10th five-wicket haul, while Al-Amin Hossain, Nasir Hossain and Abdur Razzak all chipped in with one wicket apiece.
New Zealand ended the day on 419/8 and will resume their innings tomorrow at 09:30 local time or 03:30 GMT.
