Wagner registered his maiden five-wicket haul

New Zealand left-arm pace bowler Neil Wagner stole the spotlight on the second day of the second Test in Mirpur, which finished early due to heavy rain, with a five-wicket haul.

Starting the day on 228/5, Bangladesh crumbled under a rejuvenated New Zealand bowling attack, which had come alive just before rain ended play early on day one.

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim started out the day on 14, but could only add four runs onto his total before he was caught out off the bowling of Wagner.

None of the batsmen after Rahim managed to make major contributions as Bangladesh were bowled out for 282.

Wagner was easily the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with his maiden five-wicket haul, while Ish Sodhi snapped up three wickets and Trent Boult and Corey Anderson both chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Trailing by 282, New Zealand got off to a rough start as opening batsman Hamish Rutherford was caught out off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan for 13.

Rutherford’s opening partner, Peter Fulton, followed soon after as he was given out lbw to become Al Hasan’s second victim of the day.

Hasan struck once again just before play ended as he picked up the key wicket of New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, who only managed to amass 11 runs.

Kane Williamson was struck on the side of his face by a short-pitched delivery from Rubel Hossain and was taken off by the physiotherapist.

Williamson remained unbeaten on 28 off 38 balls, which included three boundaries, while Ross Taylor eased his way to 37 off 61 deliveries, which included three boundaries as well.

Just a while before the scheduled tea break, the rain returned and when it refused to relent, the umpires had no choice but to end play early for the second consecutive day.

Al Hasan took all three wickets for Bangladesh.

New Zealand finished the day on 107/3 and will resume their innings tomorrow at 09:30 local time or 03:30 GMT.
