Waugh believes Clarke has truly cemented his legacy as one of the best batsmen in the world

Legendary Australia batsman Steve Waugh believes that current Test captain Michael Clarke is truly Sir Donald Bradman personified after he became the first batsman in Test cricket history to score four double hundreds in a year.

Waugh congratulated Clarke on accomplishing the outstanding milestone and noted that he was truly leading by example and enjoying his tenure as captain of the national team.

“Clarke has become the first player to score four double centuries in a year,” Waugh said. “I should mention here that I can only imagine Bradman playing any better than how he (Clarke) is playing.

“He seems to be so relaxed in the crease with head still. Clarke has done incredibly as a captain.”

Clarke scored back-to-back double centuries against South Africa in the recently concluded three-Test series, with his first coming at The Gabba in Brisbane and the second only days later in Adelaide.

Waugh also complemented India opening batsman Virender Sehwag on playing his 100th Test match and stated that the aggressive opening batting style was first introduced by Matthew Hayden, but he added that Sehwag had taken the meaning of aggressive to a whole new level.

“Sehwag has been an incredible player, particularly on seamless wickets, but we had plans to pick him up when he toured Australia,” Waugh said.

The former Australia captain mentioned that Sehwag’s technique and style of play is misunderstood by a lot of people, who think he is nothing more than a slogger.

“He has very good still head and amazing eyes to pounce on the ball,” Waugh added, “Sehwag sets up the game and lays platform for the rest of the players to do well. He is definitely one of India’s great batsman, that’s for sure.”

When asked about whether iconic Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar should consider retiring from cricket, Waugh said: “He is still a fantastic player and he is the best judge.”

Waugh also noted that foreign players should not find it too difficult to play on Indian pitches any more since they all travel there once a year to participate in the star-studded Indian Premier League (IPL).

“It should not be difficult for any overseas player to adjust in Indian condition because most of them know the conditions here as they have been playing many IPL games,” Waugh said.
