David Warner celebrates after scoring his maiden Twenty20 International century

David Warner hammered a career-best 100 not out to lead Australia to a comprehensive 134-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Twenty20 International in Adelaide.

Being put in to bat first, Australia got off to a superb start as Warner and captain Aaron Finch amassed a 122-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries.

Finch ended up making 64, which came off 36 balls and included eight boundaries and three sixes, before he was dismissed by Lakshan Sandakan.

Warner and Glenn Maxwell piled on the runs as they forged a 107-run stand, during which Maxwell raced past his fifty, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Dasun Shanaka for a 28-ball 62, which included seven boundaries and three sixes.

Warner went on to score an unbeaten 100, which came off 56 deliveries and included 10 boundaries and four sixes, as Australia finished on 233/2.

Sandakan and Shanaka picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 234 to win, Sri Lanka were dealt a big blow on the fifth ball of their innings as opener Kusal Mendis was caught by Ashton Turner at square leg off the bowling of Mitchell Starc for a duck.

Danushka Gunathilaka only made 11 runs before being removed by Pat Cummins, who clean bowled Bhanuka Rajapaksa the very next ball.

Oshada Fernando was sent packing by Ashton Agar for 13, while Kusal Perera was cleaned up by Starc for 16.

Adam Zampa proceeded to carve through Sri Lanka’s lower order, which led to the tourists being restricted to 99/9.

Zampa was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Starc and Cummins took two wickets apiece. As for Agar, he claimed one wicket.

Warner was named Man of the Match.
