Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has revealed that Fawad Alam was overlooked for the upcoming tour of Australia since Iftikhar Ahmed was chosen as the extra middle-order batsman in the side.

Fawad has been one of the top performers on the domestic circuit for the past few years.

Last month, he scored an unbeaten 100 for Sindh in their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

However, Misbah pointed out that Iftikhar had a better average than Fawad last season.

“With Fawad Alam, we are taking one extra middle-order batsman in Iftikhar,” Misbah was quoted as saying by PakPassion. “Most teams have left-handers so once he comes into the team, we have an off-spin option. Last season, Fawad had more runs than Iftikhar, but Iftikhar also had three tons and had a higher average, plus he performed as a bowler. Australia have left-handers also, so that was also part of the equation.”
