Opening batsman Mayank Agarwal struck a superb 108 as India tormented South Africa on the opening day of the second Test in Pune.

Opting to bat first, India lost opener Rohit Sharma early on as he was caught behind off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada for 14.

Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara made up for the loss of Rohit with a 138-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their fifties.

However, shortly after bringing up his half-century, Pujara was caught by South Africa captain Faf du Plessis at first slip off the bowling of Rabada for 58, which came off 112 balls and included nine boundaries and a six.

Agarwal went on to score 108, which came off 195 deliveries and included 16 boundaries and two sixes, before he was caught by Du Plessis off the bowling of Rabada.

India skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane ensured their side ended on a high as they forged an unbeaten 75-run partnership, during which Kohli registered his fifty, before bad light brought play to an end for the day.

Kohli finished on 63, which came off 105 balls and included 10 boundaries, while Rahane remained undefeated on 18, which came off 70 deliveries and included three boundaries.

Rabada took all three wickets that fell.

India ended day one on 273/3 and will continue batting on Friday at 09:30 local time or 04:00 GMT.
