Sohail Tanvir: “[The] appointment of Misbah-ul-Haq as a head coach, in my view, is an excellent choice”

Pakistan left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir expressed his delight at former captain Misbah-ul-Haq being appointed head coach and chief selector.
Misbah was appointed to both positions on Wednesday, while Waqar Younis was named bowling coach.
While Tanvir is optimistic that Misbah will excel in both roles, he pointed out that the 45-year-old will be held responsible if Pakistan fail to live up to expectations.

“[The] appointment of Misbah-ul-Haq as a head coach, in my view, is an excellent choice,” he wrote in his blog for PakPassion. “There have been some reservations expressed about the fact that he doesn’t have international coaching experience, but he has one big advantage over other candidates. He has recently played international cricket which is a crucial factor as in the past six to eight years, the game has changed a lot not only in terms of skills needed to succeed but also in regard to the mindset required to win games.
“So, there was a need for someone who understands the demands of modern-day cricket and Misbah is definitely that person as he only retired from international cricket in 2017 and has also been playing professional cricket until the recent edition of the PSL (Pakistan Super League).
“As far as him holding a dual role of head coach and chairman of selectors is concerned, let me start by saying that this is a novel concept for us but then as I said before, we cannot know about the true value of this change until we see results from it.
“What we can say with some confidence is that Misbah is now wholly and solely responsible for the national sides. Gone will be the days where there were conflicts between the chief selector and the head coach over team selection, from now on, Misbah will in charge of the whole process and that will give him extra authority as well. This also means that as a head coach, he will not be able to hide behind the selectors decisions and blame them if things don’t go according to plans.”
