Josh Hazlewood carved through England’s batting line-up with a four-wicket haul to keep Australia in complete control on the third day in Manchester.

Starting off the day on 23/1 following a lengthy rain delay, England only added two runs to their overnight score before Craig Overton, who was sent out as the nightwatchman, was caught by Steve Smith at second slip off the bowling of Hazlewood for five runs.

England captain Joe Root and Rory Burns made up for the loss of Overton with a 141-run partnership, during which both batsmen surpassed their fifties.

Burns ended up making 81, which came off 185 balls and included nine boundaries, before he was caught by Smith at second slip off the bowling of Hazlewood.

Root went on to score 71, which came off 168 deliveries and included 10 boundaries, before he was trapped lbw off the bowling of Hazlewood.

Hazlewood struck again right at the end of the day as he clean bowled Jason Roy for 22.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow managed to forge an unbeaten four-run partnership before bad light brought play to an end for the day.

Stokes finished on seven, while Bairstow remained undefeated on two.

Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Pat Cummins claimed one.

England ended day three on 200/5, which leaves them trailing by 297 runs, and will continue batting on Saturday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
