Steve Smith struck three boundaries during his unbeaten knock of 46

Australia batsman Steve Smith looked in good touch once again as he scored an unbeaten 46 to give his side a 34-run lead over England on the third day of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Starting off the day on 267/4, England lost Ben Stokes early on as he was caught behind off the bowling of Pat Cummins for 50, which came off 96 balls and included eight boundaries.

Rory Burns went on to score 133, which came off 312 deliveries and included 17 boundaries, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

Lyon clean bowled Moeen Ali for a duck five balls later, while Jonny Bairstow was sent packing by Peter Siddle for eight runs.

Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad stabilised the innings with a 65-run partnership before Broad was removed by Cummins for 29.

England ended up being bowled out for 374, which gave them a 90-run lead, when James Anderson was dismissed by Lyon for three runs.

Woakes was left stranded on 37.

Cummins and Lyon picked up three wickets apiece, while Siddle and James Pattinson snapped up two wickets each.

Trailing by 90 runs, Australia lost opener David Warner in the third over as he was caught behind off the bowling of Broad for eight runs.

Cameron Bancroft, who opened the batting with Warner, only made seven runs before he was caught by Jos Buttler at short leg off the bowling of Moeen.

Smith and Usman Khawaja added 48 runs to the score before Khawaja was caught behind off the bowling of Stokes for 40.

Smith and Travis Head kept the runs flowing with an unbeaten 49-run partnership before bad light and heavy rain brought play to an end for the day.

Smith finished on 46, which came off 61 balls and included three boundaries, while Head remained undefeated on 21, which came off 39 deliveries and included two boundaries.

Broad, Moeen and Stokes claimed one wicket each.

Australia ended day three on 124/3 and will continue batting on Sunday at 11:00 local time or 10:00 GMT.
