Chris Woakes took a career-best six wickets and Stuart Broad claimed four as England skittled Ireland out for an abysmal 38 to win by 143 runs at Lord’s.

Ireland’s score of 38 was the seventh-lowest in Test history.

Starting off the day on 303/9, England failed to add any runs to their overnight score before they were bowled out as debutant Olly Stone was clean bowled by Stuart Thompson for a duck.

Thompson and debutant Mark Adair picked up three wickets apiece, while Boyd Rankin snapped up two and Tim Murtagh chipped in with one.

Chasing 182 to win, Ireland lost captain William Porterfield early on as he was caught behind off the bowling of Woakes for two runs.

Broad then took out Andy Balbirnie, while Woakes removed Paul Stirling, James McCollum, who was the only batsman to reach double figures with a score of 11, and Gary Wilson.

Broad added to his tally with the wickets of Kevin O’Brien and Adair, while Woakes completed his five-for with the dismissal of Thompson.

Broad sent Andy McBrine packing for a duck before Ireland were bowled out when Murtagh was cleaned up by Woakes for two runs.

Woakes finished with six wickets, while Broad claimed four.

England spinner Jack Leach was named Man of the Match for scoring a career-best 92 as a nightwatchman.
