Imam-ul-Haq: “I think the Australia defeat hurts me a lot. I was set and playing well. I should have won that match for Pakistan”

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq has admitted that he should have led the national team to victory in their World Cup loss against Australia.

Imam scored a 75-ball 53 in the match, which included seven boundaries, before he was caught behind down the leg side off the bowling of Pat Cummins.

Imam admitted that he should have taken more responsibility as he was already set at the crease and gone on to lead his team to victory. Instead, Pakistan lost the match by 41 runs.

The men in green are now in a battle against New Zealand to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup as they must beat Bangladesh at Lord’s on Friday.

If they do so, it will come down to the net run rate between them and New Zealand.

“That match against Australia is one that we should have won, we were in a good position and I was in a position to win it for country and I regret that we couldn’t do that,” he was quoted as saying by The News International.

He was further quoted by The National as saying: “I think the Australia defeat hurts me a lot. I was set and playing well. I should have won that match for Pakistan. We lost four quick wickets and I think I should have won that game and we would have beaten a big team in the World Cup.”
