Australia last toured Pakistan back in 1998

Australia could potentially tour Pakistan for a one-off Twenty20 International as Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts will visit the country in September.

Roberts will be in the sub-continent before he heads back to England for the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval.

It should also be noted that Roberts has a good relationship with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) managing director Wasim Khan, who has been determined to get Australia to tour Pakistan for the first time in more than 20 years.

The last time Australia toured Pakistan was for three Tests and three ODIs under the captaincy of Mark Taylor back in 1998.

While there are no plans for Australia to tour Pakistan for a full series, it is possible that they will play a “fly in, fly out” Twenty20 International, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

If it were to go ahead, Australia will likely be based in Dubai and take a 90-minute trip on a private jet to Karachi for a Twenty20 International before returning to Dubai immediately after.

While the security situation in Pakistan remains the biggest issue, any team that tours has been promised presidential-level security.

Pakistan Prime Minister and former captain Imran Khan could also get involved in convincing Australia to tour the country.

International teams have visited Pakistan over the last two years as Sri Lanka played a Twenty20 International in Lahore in October 2017, while the West Indies played a three-match Twenty20 series in Karachi in April 2018.
